When I was first diagnosed with depression, a loved person in my life wept and kept asking why I couldn’t just talk to her and work things out instead of seeing a therapist.

I wasn’t able to give a clear answer back then, but a safe space created by a family member does not necessarily lead to complete healing sometimes. It’s a start, definitely, and is very very helpful But it has drawbacks – especially when there’re so many implied boundary issues that can crop up.

Safety can get compromised especially if the listener is somehow already intertwined in your life to some degree.
