I deem myself to be a responsible, reasonable and rational consumer of talk therapy services. Yet one day, my therapist sat back, looked at me and said “I’m not a miracle worker, you know.”

As with any successful relationship, we must manage our expectations of each other. My therapist laid down the groundwork well, and I still need reminders because I’m so frustrated with myself. Nonetheless, she hasn’t given up on me.

Work with your therapist by laying the groundwork together. And remember – he or she is helping you.

The work still is primarily yours to do.

That being said, if your therapist’s approach (or lack of approach) is not helping you at all, feel free to voice it out and renegotiate the way forward. Sometimes this may involve seeing a new therapist. That’s fine too.

Just don’t expect miracles.
