Therapists are much more than cheerleaders. Even then, they can only lead – they can’t force. It’s still up to the patient to create new pathways in understanding, in order to think in a more helpful way.
But therapists have that very important job of being a beacon in the midst of fog. Hopefully to a dock, and not jagged rocks.
As a therapist (always in training), I appreciate this, because many clients expect a quick fix and to be told what to do. Thank you 🙂
I guess it helped that I had zero expectations that I could be helped… But my therapist quietly and clearly laid out the foundations for the road ahead. Including hope.
