This here is the crux of the matter for most people with depression. The people who choose to love us don’t have to., But in the same way, we aren’t the ones with all the answers – and we have no right to tell them not to love us, or to shut them out as long as they aren’t toxic or affecting our recovery negatively.
It’s difficult to keep silent when someone says something good about us, or loves us, but we must have the respect for them – especially if we love them! – to let them say what they believe, whether we agree or not. And taking ourselves out of the equation without talking to them about it is just disrespect for their choice to want us in their lives.
So don’t just check out like that. Check in with those who love you.
